Often, while focusing on trying to help others, we end up settling for less than what we actually deserve for ourselves. Sometimes it almost seems like when we finally do attempt to do something beneficial for ourselves, it’s as if we’ve violated some kind of unwritten code. When someone tells us, “You’re selfish,” it usually is a statement that brings us feelings of guilt. Well it’s time to change the negative connotations associated with the word selfish. Below are a few tips on how to realize your self worth and prevent settling in all aspects of your life.
When it comes to friends and family it can be difficult to tell them no, but it’s impossible to be everything to everyone all the time. Attempting to do so will leave you drained, stressed, overwhelmed and neglecting your own wants and needs. Set limitations on your availability to others. People can only take advantage of you if you allow them to. Your time and acts of kindness should not be taken for granted. Be selfish with your energy and efforts.
Romantic relationships are amazing in several ways but things can become problematic when we focus more on our partners happiness than our own. Be mindful when falling in love to not give too much of yourself early on. Allow the person to show that they’re worthy of knowing you on a deep personal level and even when they do, save a little of yourself; for yourself. Everyone you date doesn’t need to know all of your personal information and secrets. Also, it doesn’t hurt to be sure that your relationship is a fulfilling one. You’ll do less damage to your emotions and heart if you make a habit of being a little selfish in your relationships.
If you’re working towards a goal whether it be finishing school, completing a personal project, or getting a promotion at your job; don’t give up! Far too often we talk ourselves out of reaching for the accomplishments that we’re more than capable of achieving. It may not be easy but that doesn’t mean you should give up. You should always strive for better and try to elevate yourself to the next level of greatness, after all we only have one life to live so we might as well make the most of it. Be selfish and don’t settle.
