Superfoods for Better Skin

Super foods provide greater health benefits per serving and are usually low in calories and high in nutrients. Super foods are found in nature and contain excellent sources of anti-oxidants and other essential nutrients that our bodies need but cannot make.

The super foods easiest to obtain and eat on-the-go are raw salt free nuts like almonds, walnuts and cashews, which all provide fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. They’re full of vitamins and minerals like iron, magnesium and calcium. Nuts can lower your risk of heart disease when you use them as a protein substitute for red meat. The Harvard School of Public Health estimated that substituting nuts in place of carbohydrates reduced coronary heart disease by thirty to forty-five percent.

Strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries are superfoods that are loaded with fiber, vitamins, and plant compounds called phytochemicals, which lower your risk of developing chronic diseases. Eating blueberries can improve short term memory, eyesight, and even balance and coordination.

Salmon is high in protein and vitamin B and low in calories and saturated fat. This superfood can decrease growth of artery clogging plaque, reduce dangerous triglyceride levels, and lower blood pressure.

Legumes such as peas, lentils, and beans are high in protein but low in fat. They are good sources of potassium, iron, and phosphorus, and soluble fiber, which can help reduce blood cholesterol and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Vegetables that are fresh, leafy, and green are usually more flavorful and contain more vitamins than canned or frozen varieties. Broccoli is among the healthiest and easiest to obtain. It even contains a cancer fighting agent called sulforaphane.

Quinoa is a great substitute for white rice and pasta, especially if you are trying to lose weight. It’s gluten free, high in protein, and helpful to those with type 2 diabetes because it provides as much protein as rice without raising blood sugar.

Green tea is a super food that contains antioxidants and can help boost your metabolism.

Try adding a few of these items to your daily diet to expand your palate and help reduce the risk of health problems. The foods listed above contain sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and other nutrients that your body can benefit from.
